Juanita Moore 21 Agosto 2009 " Imitation of Life "

JUANITA MOORE

A second career has blossomed for former
singing star Juanita Moore with such power
and importance that her prior success as a
songstress is a certainly doomed to a secon-
dary role in the chronology of her accomplish -
ments in the entertainment world.

Hollywood`s crystal - gazers are certain
that with the release of Universal - International`s
" Imitation of Life ", Miss Moore will emerge as
one of filmdom`s most gifted dramatic actresses,
a projected talent that will not soon be forgotten.

More than 40 Negro actresses --among them
Pearl Bailey and Marian Anderson - were conside-
red by Producer Ross Hunter and Director Douglas
Sirk for the key role that first won fame for Louise
Beavers in the 1934 screen version of the classic
Fannie Hurst novel.

" When we interviewed Miss Moore , we knew our
search was over " Hunter said. " Even if she hadn`t
been an experienced performer , her sincerity ,
warmth and natural qualities would have won the role".

In " Imitation of Life," Juanita portrays a widowed
mother of a delinquent daughter who disowns her
parentage in an effort to pass as white. Lana Turner,
John Gavin , Sandra Dee , Susan Kohner, Robert Alda
and Dan O`Harrison also head the cast.

Juanita Moore was born in Los Angeles on October
19 , 1922 . Her parents , Harrison and Ella Moore, are
deceased. As a child Juanita remembers best her days
of working in her mother `s ice cream parlor.

" On days when I worked ," she recalls, " there was
very little net profit."

She was attending Jefferson High School when , at the
age of 15 , a mysterious malady left her paralyzed for
four months. Finally recovered, she went on the Los
Angeles City College where she studied drama and took
part in college theatricals.

Branching into night club work, Juanita gained rapid
success, appearing at New York`s Club Zanzibar, the
Palladium in London and Paris`s Moulin Rouge. It was
while she was in Paris that a friend urged her to combine
her singing with acting, and when World War II forced her
to leave France , she returned to the U. S. to seek dramatic
assignments.

Her first break as an actress came when Nick and Edna
Stewart gave her an important part in their Ebony Showcase
production of Jean Paul Sastre`s " No Exit " in Los Angeles.
Film director Jean Negulesco saw her and gave her the part
of Maria in 20th Century - Fox ," Lydia Bailey ." In addition
to appearing on stage laterin " Take One Giant Step" and
"Anna Lucasta ," Juanita played featured screen roles in
" A Band of Angels," "Affair in Trinidad ," " The Girl Can`t
Help It " and " Something of Value."

She has also appeared on television , playing a superstitous
maid with Brian Aherne and Joanne Dru on a Climax drama.

" But none of these compare with the role I have in " Imita-
tion of Life," Juanita said. " To me , this is the break every
actress dreams of getting. "

Unmarried , Juanita now makes her home in Los Angeles in
a four - room apartment . Her leisure time is devoted to swim-
ming and " a sad game of golf ." She also devotes a great deal
of time to charitable work as president of Benevolent Variety
Artists, a group dedicated to helping needy show people .
She like to dance, play an occasional hand of pojer, and watch
TV westerns with her wirehaired terrier, Sir Charles. Musically ,
she plays piano , is a George Gershwin fan , and loves the music
of Duke Ellington . She likes Tennessee Williams and William Faul-
kner as authors, and the acting of Marlon Brando and Ingrid Berg-
man. She speaks conversational French , treasures a set of silver
more than 100 years old and considers winning the role of " Annie"
in " Imitation of Life " the most exciting event of her life.
